Curcuma longa and Curcuma xanthorrhiza are two species of plants belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, which also includes ginger. These plants are native to South and South-East Asia and are widely used for their rhizomes, both in cooking and traditional medicine.
Curcuma longa
- Common name: Curcuma, Turmeric (english)
- Use: Curcuma longa rhizomes are the main source of powdered curcuma, widely used as a spice in curry for its distinctive yellow-orange colour and aromatic properties.
- Medical properties : It is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, mainly due to its active compound, turmeric. Curcuma longa is used to treat various conditions, ranging from inflammations and joint pain to digestive disorders. It was also studied for its potential beneficial effects on cardiovascular health, blood glucose control and even in the prevention of certain cancers.
Curcuma xanthorrhiza
- Common name: Temulawak
- Use: Less known internationally than Curcuma longa, Curcuma xanthorrhiza is mainly used in Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia. It is often used as a drink or as a food supplement.
- Medicinal properties: Curcuma xanthorrhiza is particularly recognized for its beneficial effects on the health of the liver and the digestive system. It contains a high concentration of xanthorrhizol, a compound known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it a popular treatment for liver problems and gastrointestinal disorders in traditional Asian medicine.
Although both species are used for their medicinal properties and spices, Curcuma longa is much more widely recognized and used worldwide, especially for the production of curcuma powder.
On the other hand, Curcuma xanthorrhiza is often used locally or in products specific to the Asian region.
These two species of curcuma illustrate the diversity of medicinal plants and their importance in cultural and culinary traditions around the world.
